Safety and Risk Management

Adventure With Responsibility
The word "risk" comes from the Italian risicare, meaning "to dare." At West Coast Canyoning Adventures (WCCA), we embrace that spirit—daring with skill, experience, and care.
Canyoning is a real adventure: rappelling waterfalls, swimming through currents, and exploring remote terrain. While we can’t guarantee your safety—no one can—we take every measure to manage risk with care and professionalism. It's important to understand that there is no such thing as a risk-free outdoor activity. Every meaningful adventure involves some level of risk—and with that comes challenge, reward, and personal growth.

Inherent Risks & How We Manage Them
Canyoning involves natural hazards—here are a few examples and how we manage them:
-
Swiftwater Hazards: Strong currents, hydraulics, or sudden flow changes. We monitor water levels daily and adjust plans. Each guide can cancel or reroute trips if conditions are unsafe. PFDs are available when needed.
-
Falls and Slips: Wet, uneven terrain can be slippery. We provide specialized footwear and coach safe movement through each section.
-
Rockfall: Loose rock can be a natural hazard. Everyone wears helmets. Routes are chosen and maintained to avoid overhead risk.
-
Hypothermia: Cold water and weather exposure can affect anyone.
We provide full wetsuits and adjust pacing to keep participants warm. -
Cliff Jumps and Rappels: These activities involve technical movement. All jumps are optional. Rappels are fully guided, and we can offer alternative methods such as assisted lowers for those uncomfortable with rappelling. You’ll receive clear coaching and support throughout.
-
Remote Locations: Canyons are far from urban centers. Guides are trained for wilderness emergencies and carry all essential equipment.
-

Waiver and Release Agreement
Like all adventure activities, canyoning carries inherent risks. Our trips take place in rugged, dynamic wilderness environments with flowing water, slippery surfaces, steep terrain, and natural hazards. While we take every precaution to manage and minimize these risks, incidents can still occur.
To participate, all guests are required to complete and sign a Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, Medical Disclosure, and Consent Agreement (the “Waiver and Release Agreement”).
Booking & Waiver Process
To complete your booking, the person making the reservation must provide the full names and contact information for all participants. They will then receive a digital Waiver & Participant Intake Form, which must be completed by every participant before the trip is confirmed.
This form includes:
-
A Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreement
-
Equipment sizing information
-
Relevant medical details
-
Emergency contact information
Each guest is required to complete and sign this waiver prior to participating in any activity. We ask that all waivers be submitted well in advance to help us prepare the appropriate equipment and ensure a smooth experience.
On the day of your adventure, participants will also sign a printed copy of the Waiver in person, witnessed and countersigned by a West Coast Canyoning Adventures guide or staff member.
This two-step waiver process is mandatory.
Trips will not be confirmed—and no guest will be permitted to participate—until all digital waivers are properly submitted.
This process ensures we can deliver a safe, well-prepared, and professional experience for everyone involved.
